# SUBSTR

Gets part of a piece of text

### Syntax

`SUBSTR(value, start)`

`SUBSTR(value, start, length)`

### Example

```plaintext
substr('JanFebMarApr',6,3)
```

### Notes

The example would return Mar.  Position 0 would be ‘J’, 1 would be ‘a’.  So position 6 is ‘M’.  Then we count 3 letters from there.
